FROM A PROFESSIONAL
The 35mm 1.4 is in my book probably the most versatile lens for portrait photographers. It is a wide angle so it works beautifully for any type of scenic shots. With the low aperture of 1.4 it gives your dreamy Bokeh for portraits. What I love most about this lens is that the portraits make you feel like you are really there, in the moment. You can get nice and close with this lens which creates this beautiful personal feel in portraits that I absolutely love. It is tack sharp and works amazingly in low light situations. With it being a wide angle portrait lens it allows you to be inches away from your subject, without losing any space from the image. Below is a side by side comparison of exactly the same shot, taken at the same place with the 50mm 1.2 and the 35mm 1.4. You'll notice that with the 35mm I was able to be close to my subject and still keep everything I wanted in the frame. traditional portrait lenses like the 50mm, 85mm, 100mm are awesome lenses, but if you're looking for a lens that has that close personal feel in the shots, you'll love using the 35mm 1.4!
The EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM from Canon is an L-series prime wide-angle lens featuring Blue Spectrum Refractive Optics and a maximum aperture of f/1.4, making it ideal for shooting in low-light situations and for controlling depth of field. Two aspherical elements and one Ultra Low Dispersion (UD) element combine with the BR element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing for increased clarity and sharpness. A Subwavelength Coating has also been applied to reduce ghosting and lens flare for greater color accuracy and contrast. The Ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast and near-silent AF operation. Full time manual focus override enables precise manual focus even when in AF mode.
